Australian police arrest four BEC actors who stole $1.7 million
Four members of a cybercriminal syndicate, who allegedly laundered $1.7 million from at least 15 victims between January 2020 and March 2023, have been arrested by the Australian Federal Police. The syndicate was involved in a range of operations including BEC attacks, scams targeting Facebook Marketplace users, fraudulent superannuation investments, and more. They used a network of 180 bank accounts to launder the money and some of these were opened in South African banks with stolen identities. The four individuals are facing charges related to money laundering and production and processing of false travel documents, with a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
